Welcome Erik A. Hasenboehler, MD, FACS
Penn Highlands Healthcare welcomes multi-board-certified orthopedic trauma surgeon Erik A. Hasenboehler, MD, FACS, to its medical staff.
Dr. Hasenboehler joins the team at Penn Highlands Orthopedic Trauma, located at 123 Hospital Avenue in DuBois, as the Chief of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery.
Dr. Hasenboehler is a highly skilled specialist, having completed extensive training and multiple fellowships in his field. With more than two decades of experience, he provides expert surgical care to patients experiencing orthopedic traumatic injuries.
Common treatments and procedures include fractures of the upper and lower extremities; fractures of the wrist, collar bone, shoulder, elbow, ankle and knee; hip fractures; open fractures; complex peri-articular fractures; peri-prosthetic fractures (fractures around total joint implants); pelvic fractures and acetabular fractures; fracture deformities; and nonunion and fracture infections.
Prior to joining Penn Highlands, Dr. Hasenboehler practiced with the Orthopaedic Institute of Pennsylvania as the chief of orthopedic trauma at Holy Spirit Hospital Penn State Health (Level 2 Trauma Center) in Camp Hill.
Dr. Hasenboehler graduated from the University of Bern Faculty of Medicine in Bern, Switzerland. He completed his surgery and orthopedic trauma surgery residency in Switzerland. He holds dual board certification in Switzerland and is board certified in orthopedic surgery in the United States.
After his residency, Dr. Hasenboehler pursued additional fellowship training in orthopedic trauma at the University of Colorado Denver Health Medical Center and Panorama Orthopaedics St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver, Colo., and in acute care and critical care surgery at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
Dr. Hasenboehler served as an assistant professor (tenure track) in the department of orthopedic surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., for almost 10 years. During his time at Hopkins, he was the leading orthopedic trauma surgeon at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (Level 2 Trauma Center), where he established the current orthopedic trauma service and served as the medical director of the Musculoskeletal Clinic. He was nominated as a top doctor in Baltimore for orthopedic trauma in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020.
In addition to his extensive surgical experience, Dr. Hasenboehler has devoted substantial time to teaching and training of the next generations of orthopedic surgeons nationally and internationally. In recognition of his teaching, he received the “Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Department Best Teacher Award of the Year” in 2018 and 2019, and in 2018 he also received the Award for “Most Influential Attending of the Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Surgery Department.” He has published extensively, including a book on post-traumatic arthritis. Dr. Hasenboehler serves as faculty at the AO North America and is part of the EAST Practice Guidelines Committee. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
